The fast bowler Set to Play a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The Australian skipper has taken 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about his chances of participating.

"We're aware that time is getting short and various factors at play, aside from the physical problem, but additional elements," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a key capacity. Ideally from the opening match. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of back injuries, with setbacks in multiple past seasons causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the contest.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against India as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "small issue and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs anyway. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for a short period, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
