As any prominent prize-giving event approaches, there’s always a demand for introducing of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of fans with niche passions.
A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.
Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything during that awards season
- Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment recently
- Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent small games, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games globally maintaining this status for many years.
The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay decades.
