Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several approach shafts leading to the facility... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their valour," he said. "They were part of a great many British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military carried out what it termed a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
