EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
